統計(英文：Statistics)是應用數學的一個分支，它是在數據分析的基礎上，運用概率論方法建立數學模型，對數據進行研究、測定、收集、整理、總結和分析，以提供正確的信息。
大多數美國學校都開設了統計專業，不同的是，有些是統計碩士，有些是生物統計，有些是金融統計，還有應用統計、數學統計等等，而且有些學校還同時開設了兩個統計專業(例如加州大學戴維斯分校和密歇根大學安娜堡大學都
開設了統計學和生物統計學)。統計學專業一般開設在文理學院的統計系或者數學系下面。統計學本身是比較偏理論的，但是像生物統計、應用統計、社會統計等方向是比較偏應用的。
統計學專業對申請者的數學背景要求很高，非統計學專業的申請者在本科期間需要學習數字分析、線性代數、隨機過程、概率和數理統計等課程，并且相關計算機軟件的應用能力也很重要，例如C++。
